Going by the reviews, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon will be shoe-ins for Emmy nominations after their stellar performances in the new HBO film, Behind the Candelabra, based on the life of Liberace. Described as “extraordinary”, on why the film wasn’t a cinematic release (which has robbed Douglas and Damon of Oscar nods), director Steven Soderbergh told the New York Post: “We went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay. And this is after ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us.”

You have to remember, most of his female fans were in denial about Liberace’s dating prference. Or at least he believed that they were.
Hollywood was probably worried about shattering that illusion.
I think it should have been a feature film. But than again I remember how much bigger than life Liberace always was so why shouldn’t he be on the movie screen.
We got a book in about his costumes the other day, was telling the manager how his famiky settled around the Milwaukee area & how he paid pack all of the state/government aid to the state of WI. After he was famous. She thought I was making fun of him. I had to exp,air to her that no, that’s part of the reason why I love & respect him.
Deep denial? That’s an understatement, E…LOL! Most of his fans would be quite old, or dead now. I don’t think there’s anyone left who doesn’t know his sexual preference. It’s obvious. Maybe distributors were more concerned about Douglas and Damon’s sex scenes affecting THEIR fans and ticket sales…I don’t know. Just a shame the actors won’t be getting the praise they seemingly deserve, with Oscar nods, for their work. I look forward to seeing it. Let me know if you see it first 🙂
To say that the movie is to gay is like saying Snow White is porn, after all she did live with seven men. I don’t think that I will ever understand this world of ours.
